PPP provincial council vows to protect democratic rule in the country Karachi The Sindh chief minister rubbished on Wednesday calls for the revival of a presidential form of governance in the country. “Those talking about a presidential system live in a fool’s paradise as the system of governance in the country is a parliamentary one and it will continue to remain that way,” Syed Qaim Ali Shah said while chairing a meeting of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party’s provincial council. This was the first time that the Sindh chief minister publicly expressed his reaction to the political agenda announced by Muttahida Qaumi Movement dissident leader and former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal last week. During his press conference on March 3, besides levelling allegations against MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Kamal had also called for replacing the country’s parliamentary system of governance with a presidential one. However, the Sindh chief minister did not mention Kamal’s name during the meeting. The Sindh council meeting of the PPP was convened to chalk out a programme for observing the 37th death anniversary of the founder of party’s founder, the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, on April 4. A major public meeting will be held in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Larkana to commemorate the say. PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other party leader will speak there. The chief minister praised Bhutto’s political services and said the late founder of the party had sacrificed his life to uphold his principles and did not bow down to military dictator General Ziaul Haq. He said that the activists and supporters of the PPP had been following in the footsteps of Bhutto. He said the present party chairman, Bilawal, was as popular among the masses as was his mother Benazir Bhutto and his maternal grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The chief minister said Bilawal would soon visit Punjab and other areas in the upcountry to address public gatherings. Shah said in the 2018 general elections, the PPP would again emerge again and not just be victorious in Sindh, but also sweep polls in other parts of the country. Resolutions The participants of the PPP Sindh council meeting later adopted resolutions for reaffirming confidence in the leadership of Bilawal and the party’s co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and the steps they had taken. The also adopted a resolution to express resolve on behalf of party cadres to defend and safeguard constitutional and democratic rule in the country and foil the conspiracies being hatched against it . Another resolution congratulated the family of slain Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer on the recovery of his abducted son, Shahbaz Taseer. The participants of the meeting expressed optimism that Ali Haider Gilani, former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son who was abducted in 2013, would also be rescued by the security agencies soon. They also praised the members of the Sindh Assembly for unanimously adopting a Hindu marriage bill into law last month.
