HC questions CBI’s opposition to Sooraj Pancholi’s passport return plea

Actor Sooraj Pancholi is in trouble with the CBI yet again. The actor, who is charged with abetment to suicide in the Jiah Khan Suicide case, had moved the Bombay High Court with a plea for return of passport, which is confiscated by the CBI currently, in order to be able to travel abroad for professional commitments. The CBI, however, has opposed Sooraj's plea citing disclosure issues, reported The Hindu. According to the report, CBI Counsel Hiten Venegaonkar on Wednesday (9 March, 2016) told Justice Mridula Bhatkar that since the actor had not disclosed his complete travel plan and itinerary, his passport should not be returned. Venegaonkar said to the bench that the CBI has "string objections" to Sooraj's plea since they do not know where he intends to go and what exactly is the purpose of this visit. Venegaonkar also brought to the bench's notice that Jiah was a foreign national and that her mother had filed a petition before the court seeking an investigation by international agencies. Expressing doubt over the issue Justice Bhatkar said that the offense was "committed on Indian land" and Sooraj was being "tried under the Indian Penal Code." Hence, the investigations conducted by foreign agencies should not be an issue. On June 10, 2013, Sooraj, who was romantically involved with Jiah, was booked under IPC section 306 (abetment to suicide), but was granted bail by the HC on July 2, 2013. The CBI took over the case on August 13, 2014.
