kissing in school girl and boys by umar-akmalOne of my favorite T-shirts in my old collection said something to the effect that “It will be a great day when schools have all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale.” Indeed, we continue to need supplements to our educational system to this day. It was wishful thinking. Attending parochial school, we sold rosaries, some Catholic newspaper (that didn’t last long); collected newspapers for recycling — one got paid by the pound for them in those days (probably a lot of those Catholic newspapers in the pile) and held a Halloween carnival with moneymakers like Cakewalks. Needless to say, that did well. In high school, every year they would tow some junker car into the quad area in front of the gym. At lunch, for $5, you could take a swing at it with a big ol’ sledge hammer. Get your ya ya’s out as well as raise money. I never wanted to show off my amazing strength-for-such-a-small-girl, so I left it up to the football players and other studly dudes. Car washes are another popular income generator. Schools, church groups and even the Youth Center held one with the help of Windsor Construction’s water truck in the parking lot of the Vets Hall. Thank goodness for Windsor. Thank goodness for having a lovely big parking lot. It’s fun, everyone gets wet and soapy and goofy. Big tips. Of course, drive-through barbecues are the town’s biggest fundraiser for folks in need. But the volleyball team and other sporting groups have implemented this tactic with good success. Having an accompanying bake sale is mandatory. I believe bake sales were the original fundraiser in American history. “Betsy, we love what you’ve done with the flag … but do you think you can whip up some snickerdoodles that we may sell them at the crossroads to enable us to purchase more fabric to make more?” Magazine sales, See’s Candy, wrapping paper … none compare to Cow Plop Bingo. OK, I love See’s Candy, but I remember years ago when the lot next to what’s now the 927 Beer Co. was penned in, with one or two cows (were those from the Pedotti’s?) mulling over the corral that was chalked in with numbered squares. The idea was you bought a number for whatever the dollar amount was, and waited. For the cow to, you know … plop. On your square. Could have lasted an hour. Could have waited all day. Depends on how much roughage they’d consumed. Hilllllarious. This week, another good event is wrapping up at the Cambria Grammar School. The PTA put together a “Kiss a Pig” contest. Yep. Live one, courtesy of Tara Covell. There were plastic piggy banks on campus with each teacher’s name on them along with the principal’s. Whoever got the most dollar votes “won.” Hahahahaha. Collin Younger has that honor at Friday’s special assembly. They made almost $500! With a stock market-like graph in the office, the kids got a real kick out of it. As much as PTA needs the funds, it was really a morale booster as the school year has headed into that downward slide toward summer. Funds and fun. I suppose the Air Force is never going to hold a bake sale. So, our kids are realizing that they’ve got to work hard for what they deserve anyway — an education — but they can at least have fun along the way and build team spirit!
